The Alterra Capital Partners team has over 100+ years of combined private equity experience and invested $1.9 billion of capital into 20 companies across Africa. The Alterra team has lived and worked on the continent for decades and leverages its substantial experience and deep  networks to drive the growth of its investments.

THE ORIGIN

Alterra Capital Partners was formed through the combination of individuals from two of the most experienced managers on the continent, Carlyle Africa and Emerging Capital Partners. The combination was driven by the respective team’s longstanding working relationship, complementary investment strategies, geographic footprints, and shared vision.

THE TEAM

Our team has 100 years of experience in private equity and over 70 years in Africa.

The Alterra team consists of seasoned investment professionals with expertise across a range of industries backed by a wealth of cumulative PE experience. The Managing Directors have an average 19 years of private equity investment experience. Together, they have invested in 20 companies totaling $1.9 billion across the major regions of Africa and have developed an extensive understanding of the transactional and operating issues and opportunities on the Continent.

ALTERRA AND SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is fundamental to Alterra’s investment strategy. Alterra strives to facilitate sustainable business growth within its portfolio while also contributing to the sustainable development of the communities in which portfolio companies operate.

Alterra’s approach to sustainability, outlined in the Alterra ESG and Impact Policy, is based on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) risk identification, management, and mitigation. The International Finance Corporation’s Environmental and Social Performance Standards serve as guiding principles. Additionally, Alterra works with portfolio companies to develop intentional plans to drive economic and social development on the African continent. Alterra’s impact focus areas are job creation and skills development, women’s empowerment, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Alterra is a signatory to the UN Principles for Responsible Investing (UNPRI). Alterra uses as impact reporting frameworks the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures recommendations and 2X Challenge criteria.
